Biography

Born 1975, Moree, NSW Australia.

Based in London since 2008 and exhibiting since 2005, Ussher’s most recent shows include 'Casual Conversations' at Minerva, Sydney, 'The Mind goes out to Meet Itself' at Artspace, Sydney, 'Is it your body I hold in my arms or the Sea?' at Station, Melbourne, 'The White Hotel' curated by Lucy Stein and Simon Bayliss at Gimpel Fils, "Yellow Eyes Burn and Return' at TarraWarra Museum, and ‘Amaurots Mirror’ for the 2012 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Ussher’s work was presented in ‘Melbourne Now’ at the National Gallery of Victoria 2013, ‘Hysteria, Laughter & a Sense of Seriousness’ at KarmaInternational & Gregor Staiger, conceived by Mareike Dittmer & Raphael Gygax in 2011, ‘SV10’, Selected by Rebecca Warren & Jennifer Higgie for Studio Voltaire, London, ‘Lost & Found: An Archaeology of the Present, TarraWarra Biennial’, curated by Charlotte Day, 2008, ‘Present Elsewhere’, Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, 2008, ‘Helovanorak’, which traveled to the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art in 2008, was presented within ‘New Australian Drawing’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 2009 and ‘Recent Australian Drawing’ at Heidi Museum of Modern Art, 2010. 

A recipient of the 2016 Australia Council Award for the British School at Rome, a 2015-2020 Acme Studios Fire Station Residency, London UK, Australia Council for the Arts 2013 New Work Grant, the 2010 Marten Bequest Traveling Scholarship, Australia Council for the Arts London Studio in 2009, Sydney University Power Institute Cité des Arts Paris Studio during 2008 and 2006 ANZ Art & Australia Emerging Artist Award. Ussher was an artist in residence at Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces from 2005 to 2006, and was a founding member of the artist initiative CLUBSproject.

Usshers work is held in public and private collections, in particular the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of South Australia, UBS, Credit Suisse & Art & Australia
